Sensibility and Aesthetics
Critical thinking is not only intellectual, but also physical and psychological. One 'feels' (anubhava)the inputs from the sensory organs, that is processed by the 'mind' (mana, manas) distinctly and often differently from the brain (buddhi) thinking about them and co-relating it to other knowledge.
The finer sensibilities of every human being need to be nurtured and developed specially in a designer, as an artist, for the full professional ability, much more than that logical-analytical thinking. The design profession has in keeping with the rest of the society, prioritised the brain, and has championed the visual over all other sensory abilities, for too long.
Design, specially the built form, cannot be what it is without the tactile, the aural, and even the olfactory. And how can one begin to design anything without understanding the emotions of awe, calm, hope, cheer, etc. The education of a designer cannot be based on input lessons on history where one intellectually 'talks' of these feelings.
An example in spatial design, is of Light, a key element in architecture and interior design. Would one restricted to 'measuring' light (lux, lumens, etc.) be enough to work with light to create various kinds of spaces for different functions? Would a prayer place for hope or for courage be the same if one relied on numbers & units? There are numerous other examples.
Aesthetics, as a discipline, relies on and dwells on these sensitibilities and the emotions / feelings (sthayi, vyabhichari bhavas as per the Rasa theory) using the materials of a chosen discipline, such as ingredients and processes (in cooking), movement in time & space (in dance), notes in time in music, etc.
The module, as one may guess, is for one-half an immersive one dealing with the senses and inculcating the attention they deserve, to train the mind; and for the other half an exploratory one, dealing with understanding the aeshthetic representation of emotions and feelings through works of art and building.
