Critical Urban Thinking - An Ideology Critique of the City

Description

Seeing the City, in particular its most prominent buildings and the texture of its fabric, as a demonstration of power, and hence the playground of the thinking of those in power / governance. This may differ from the time of indigenous rule, to conquerors to colonists to the modern age of democratic governments of varying inclinations.

Central to the discourse would be the ideas of Karl Marx, who, though not talking explicitly on cities or buildings, has great impact on the "way of seeing" (as John Berger would put it) the city.  The inputs would be of lectures, reading (such as Marx, Tafuri, Berger and others), watching films, and discussions, leading to a short assignment on how the city can be "seen", interpreted and if felt needed, re-interpreted.
